Window on Pakistan

Pakistan is opening up new strategic opportunities for Russia in South Asia, marking a reboot of their long-standing, friendly relations.

Half a century ago, the USSR helped build a metallurgical plant in Karachi, providing the technology, equipment, and worker training. Now, after the facility has lain dormant for years, discussions are underway to restore it – once again with support from Moscow. And back in 2005, when a 7.6 magnitude earthquake struck Pakistan, Russian EMERCOM rescuers were among the first on the ground to offer assistance.

Today, Pakistan is only just beginning to tap into its rich natural resources and is once again seeking technological and intellectual support from Moscow. A growing number of students are pursuing higher education in Russia in critical fields such as energy, mining, and medicine.

Soon, pharmacies in Pakistan could be stocking insulin produced in Russia. With Western medications often being too expensive, strong trade ties with Russia promise to make essential medicines much more affordable. This will be a lifeline for millions of people with diabetes. Explore all of this in ‘Window on Pakistan’.
